Summary

I'm Bullish on Software and Negative on Software Businesses

Main Topics

  • Software commoditization and the ease of switching between services
  • Implementation costs (or lack thereof) in modern software
  • Market dynamics in SaaS and AI-powered services
  • Business viability of software companies vs. the technology itself

Key Points

  • Personal example: The speaker re-implemented their own granola tool and needed transcription/summarization capabilities
  • Initially used ChatGPT's Whisper
  • Switched to Assembly AI when limitations appeared
  • Switch was frictionless with no implementation costs
  • The core problem:
  • Software services are increasingly interchangeable
  • No switching costs or vendor lock-in creates intense competition
  • Companies cannot build defensible moats
  • Market implication:
  • Software as a capability is tremendously valuable
  • Software as a business is increasingly difficult to monetize long-term
  • Services are reduced to "just tokens" with minimal differentiation

Notable Quotes

> "There's no way for anyone to make real money on any of these things. If I don't like one service or it cuts me off, there's no implementation cost. I'm just like, do the better one. And it's done."

> "That's why I'm so bullish on software and so negative on software businesses."

Takeaways

  • Software commoditization is real: Ease of switching between providers eliminates competitive advantages for individual software businesses
  • Low friction = low customer loyalty: Without implementation or migration costs, customers will instantly migrate to better or cheaper alternatives
  • Business model crisis: Traditional SaaS pricing and customer retention strategies may be obsolete in an era of interchangeable services
  • Bullish on capability, bearish on companies: The technology itself is valuable, but the business opportunity for individual software companies is constrained

I just re-implemented my own granola because I got annoyed with granola. But then it starts limiting me. So I was like, build my own version. I need transcription and summarization. And it's like, great, we'll use ChatGPT's Whisper. I don't even think about it. It's done. But then it starts limiting me. So I'm like, fine, what's a better service? And it pointed me at Assembly AI, which by the way, we received investors. I put 100K into their first round, but they're crushing it. So I'm like, great, this is cheaper. This does multi-party full transcription of everything. It's way better. So again, this goes back to like, there's no way for anyone to make real money on any of these things. If I don't like one service or it cuts me off, there's no implementation cost. I'm just like, do the better one. And it's done. That's why I'm so bullish on software and so negative on software businesses. I don't like, these are just tokens.
